2012 Biodiversity Milestone Awards

Hon Bill Marmion, Minister for Environment; Water presented five Local Governments with a Biodiversity Milestone Award at a ceremony held on Wednesday 1 August at the 2012 Local Government Convention in Perth. The Milestone Awards recognise Local Governments for their progress in the local biodiversity planning process.

Three Local Governments were recognised for consulting with their community the introduction of various provisions for retention and protection of biodiversity through their local planning frameworks. City of Wanneroo reached two Milestones, one for proposed amendments to its District Planning Scheme and one for adoption of Local Planning Policies that provide for retention and protection of locally significant biodiversity. Shire of Kalamunda prepared and released a Draft Local Planning Strategy which included references to the Shire’s Local Biodiversity Strategy. Finally, Shire of Mundaring was recognised for the release of a Draft Local Planning Strategy and Amendments to its Local Planning Scheme No. 4 with several new provisions designed to provide for retention and protection of high conservation value local natural areas. These new provisions are designed to facilitate the achievement of the local biodiversity conservation goals, adopted through the Shire’s Local Biodiversity Strategy.

Serpentine-Jarrahdale Shire was recognised for public reporting of progress with implementation of its Local Biodiversity Strategy. This is the Shire’s fifth Milestone Award.

Shire of Murray was recognised for its commitment to undertake local biodiversity conservation planning. With assistance from the Perth Biodiversity Project, they have carried out scoping, resource identification to implement the biodiversity planning process, and put up resources towards the project. In March this year, they formed a steering committee to oversee the project implementation. It is anticipated that a draft document will be released for public comment in early 2013.
