WALGA's Perth Biodiversity Project & South West Biodiversity Project - World Environment Day 2010 Award Winners
WALGA's Perth Biodiversity Project & South West Biodiversity Project - World Environment Day 2010 Award Winners

A National Awards program organized by the United Nations Association of Australia (Victoria Office)

United Nations Association of Australia (Victoria Division) (UNAA) announced the winners of 2010 World Environment Day Awards on 4th June at an Awards Presentation Dinner held at Grand Hyatt in Melbourne.

Awards were presented in 14 categories and the new Department of Sustainability and Environment Biodiversity Award went to the Western Australian Local Government Association for the Perth Biodiversity Project and the South West Biodiversity Project.

The Award acknowledges the continuous effort in assisting Local Government in the internationally recognized hotspot for biodiversity conservation to conserve biodiversity locally. UNAA’s judges commented on these projects as ‘hav(ing) demonstrated how local governments can strategically and systematically build biodiversity conservation into their vital roles as managers of land and as statutory planners of land use. The projects provide an innovative and effective approach that could have widespread application throughout Australia.’

The Award presentation provides an opportunity to acknowledge current and past supporters of these projects. Without the continuous support and participation by 43 Local Governments, reaching of project’s objectives would be extremely difficult. City of Bunbury deserves a special mention as a Local Government that hosted the South West Biodiversity Project between 2006 and 2009. The achievements of the PBP and the SWBP were made possible due to funding programs such as the Natural Heritage Trust I & II, Caring for our Country Program and the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality, delivered through the Perth Regions NRM and the South West Catchment Council as well as due to support by the Department of Environment and Conservation, Office of Environmental Protection Authority and Department of Planning through EnviroPlanning, Greening WA and the Western Australian Local Government Association. Continuation of the Perth Biodiversity Project on 2009-2010 has been made possible with funding from the State NRM Program through the Western Australian Planning Commission and the Department of Planning. Special thanks go to all.

Finally, thank you goes to the United Nations Association of Australia (Victoria Division) for organizing the National Awards Program and to all sponsors supporting it. The Awards provide a good opportunity to highlight environmental initiatives and programs across Australia, motivating and inspiring many in more local actions.
